Elegant and imposing, the W116 S-Class was instrumental in reinforcing Mercedes position as manufacturers of the best cars in the world. They were the first of Mercedes flagship Sonderklasse saloons to be known as the S-Class, starting a line that continues today.
This 280SE was one of the last of the W116 shape. It was supplied new in West London in July 1980. Specified with Classic White paintwork with dark blue check cloth trim, it came equipped with electric windows, sunroof and air conditioning.
Only four owners from new. The third, a Mr Batty of Rutland, kept the car from 1986 until 2013. It has covered just over 100k miles from new – hardly excessive in 38 years.
Overall, this is a good, solid ready to go example needing a bit of improvement. It has 12 months MoT and drives really well, so it can be used and enjoyed as it is.
Crucially the underside/structure of the car is solid and original with minimal repairs. The body is generally tidy with nice brightwork, however three of the doors have some corrosion at their lower edges.
The interior is generally good and original, even down the original stereo. Everything works as it should apart from the sunroof and the driver’s electric window requires some attention.
Mechanically the car appears to be in good shape. The engine runs sweetly with good oil pressure, the gearbox is very smooth, the car rides well and stops well too thanks to recent new brake calipers.
The original books and manuals come with the car. There is no service book but a folder of recent receipts indicating thousands spent. In addition, the calipers, the car has also recently had a new alternator, HT leads and a new battery, and was last serviced 2000 miles ago.
Perfect for the enthusiast who is looking for a car to use, enjoy and improve. a fantastic opportunity to own a classic Mercedes from the ‘chrome bumper era’ at a very reasonable price.
