With the smooth and potent six-cylinder M103 engine, the relatively rare 190E 2.6 was the W201 at its best, this side of a Cosworth. Simply because this was the only non-sporting W201 to offer real performance to go alongside their much vaunted solidity, style and usability. Though their high price ensured they sold in much smaller numbers than the 1.8 2.0 four-cylinder cars.
This Astral Silver 2.6 is a very early facelift car, first registered in September 1989. Its first owner was a Harley Street doctor before passing to an author. In total it has had six owners from new.
The interior is trimmed in dark blue cloth and, unusually, it is equipped with air conditioning in addition to electric windows all round, 15-hole alloys and headlamp wash/wipe.
This 190E has a very good history folder. It comes with all its original books/manuals and service book. There are 19 services recorded in the service book and further services recorded by their invoices. We have just serviced the car at its current mileage of 158k.
Overall the car is a very honest, solid original example. It has not been messed about with or modified in any way. It’s HPI clear and free of accident damage and, as you can see on the photos is free of any rust. All the jacking points, front wings and rear arches are good and original. The underside appears very good with clean suspension, fuel and brake lines, and it has never been welded. The paint work is good with the exception of the usual minor marks around the car commensurate with its 28 years, and a slight colour mismatch on then offside rear door.
The interior is very presentable with a good driver’s seat bolster and original ribbed over-mats.
We have just serviced the car, fitted a new under-bonnet sound deadening and fitted four new Bridgestone tyres on the original 15-hole alloy wheels. It will come with 12 months MoT for the buyer.
The car runs beautifully. The engine is beautifully sweet with perfect temperature and oil pressure readings. The gearbox changes smoothly, the suspension is compliant with no untoward noises and the steering is very sharp with none of the usual play. In short, the car drives very well indeed.
There are a couple of jobs for the next owner to get stuck into, beyond minor cosmetics, the central locking isn’t working, the front towing eye cover is missing and the radio aerial is stuck in the up position.
All in all, this 190E 2.6 would make a fantastic daily driver or a great project car to improve while you drive as it’s a very original, solid car that drives very well. Great value for money.
