A six-cylinder 124 estate (S124) is such a fabulous ‘do anything’ car, it’s following the first luxury estate in the desirability stakes, the S123.

This 300TE will make a great ‘improve while you use’ project, or can be simply driven as is, like a comfortable old slipper, it’s a little dog-eared at the edges.

Supplied new by Bradshaw & Webb of Chelsea and remained in London ever since. Four owners from new and has been owned for the last 11 years by renowned artist in Primrose Hill. The perfect vehicle for transporting paintings.

Despite having the biggest engine available – the beautifully smooth 3-litre straight six – this early 124 has a fantastically austere specification with tough and workmanlike MB Tex interior trim.

The car has covered a not insubstantial 241k miles over its 28 years. But it is a testament to how good these cars are that it drives really well. I have driven the car every day for a week and it has not missed a beat. No steering play, no suspension clunks, excellent brakes and plenty of power from the smooth, quiet, smoke-free straight six.

The body could do with some attention – usual dings, rust bubbles on the rear arches and so forth, but it still looks presentable enough from a few feet! Front wings have been replaced and are rust free and the all important rear side window frames are excellent – see photos. The jacking points have been welded in the past.

The interior is pretty good with only minor wear. The rear load area is in fact excellent and has been protected by a genuine MB load liner that has protected the boot carpet. This is a 124 estate that has not been used as a van!
Everything works including the heating, electric windows, boot soft-close and rear wiper.

No service history but the car has evidently been looked after given the recent matching set of Continental tyres, new radiator, exhaust, greased door check-straps etc. Two sets of keys and owner’s manual. HPI clear with certificate.

The current MoT is until November so it’s ready to use. A great first series 124 estate to use and improve, I nearly kept it myself.
