An extremely original pre-facelift W124 300E with a good specification in lovely order throughout.
Supplied new by MB dealers, Arlington Motor Co. Ltd. to Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Ltd. in April 1989, this 300E had a busy first year as by August 1990 it had covered nearly 36k miles. In the October of that year it was then sold by a Rolls Royce/Jaguar specialist in London to a Mr Charnley who kept the car until he passed away. I purchased the car for my father, who has been the keeper for the owner for the last two years, in 2014 from Mr Charnley’s estate. So this is essentially a three owner car, with one owner 1990-2014.
Comes with owner’s manual, service book, virtually all old MoTs, HPI Certificate, spare key and a folder of receipts. All MB service stamps from the first owner up to 36k miles, but unfortunately as is often the way with cars from deceased estates, no records from the second owner. That said, when we purchased the car in 2014, I noticed the matching Pirelli tyres, the recently replaced genuine Mercedes shock absorbers (all round), genuine water pump and exhaust system. The engine is extremely clean inside and all MoTs during the second owner’s tenure were carried out at the same Nissan main dealer. So you have to draw your own conclusions as to how it’s been looked after. I did.
In 2014 we fully recommissioned the car, including changing all fluids and filters including transmission and differential. Replaced the under-bonnet sound deadening (genuine MB), fitted a new Blaupunkt Toronto stereo with Bluetooth and hands-free. More recently (in October 2015) the car was serviced again, fitted with new spark plugs, leads and Bosch distributor car and rotor arm.
The car has evidently been garaged throughout its life. It’s largely original paint and all original panels. As you can see from the photographs it’s in superb condition for its 27 years with only a few minor marks/chips you’d expect for a very original car.
The interior is superb with no fading or cracking to the woodwork. The leather is very good and remains supple. The optional (factory fit) air conditioning blows cold and all accessories work as they should.
Matching Pirelli tyres all round with excellent tread mounted on the original 15-hole alloy wheels.
Drives beautifully – quiet, smooth and with plenty of power. The W124 is such an iconic car and a high-water mark for Mercedes. An unmolested, low mileage early car like this with the 3-litre engine is a delightful car to own and getting very hard to find.
