The legendary W109 300SEL 6.3 needs little introduction. The fastest four-door saloon of its era that also boasted air suspension and fuel injection, all wrapped in the most sober of suits.
Erich Waxenberger’s private project that miraculously got the green light from the conservative management at Mercedes was a hot rod, albeit a sophisticated one, capable of accelerating to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to 137mph.
Of the 6526 cars built, only 702 were right hand drive. There are less than ten licensed in the UK today.
This 1971 6.3 is finished in 040 Black with contrasting Parchment leather trim. Unusually it was supplied new in Japan with right-hand drive. Almost all 6.3s we have seen supplied to Japan have been left-hand drive due to the perceived status of left-hand drive, and therefore imported, car.
Supplied by The Western Automobile Company – the sole importers of MB cars in that era – it was owned by a corporation from ’71 to ’76, then to a private individual who kept the car from ’76 until 2015.
Including ourselves, this 6.3 has had four owners from new.
We have detailed service history from 1991, plus an English translation. Once in the UK we carried out a thorough overhaul of the air suspension that included having all the valves rebuilt along with the dryer and compressor. A major service was also carried out before the car was issued with an MoT and registered in the UK.
The wonderful thing about this particular 6.3 is how incredibly original it is. Absolutely zero corrosion, all original panels and has never had any rust or accident repair. The majority of the paintwork is original, and underneath the nuts and bolts are still shiny and factory paint marks still evident.
The paintwork is imperfect but it has a lovely patina to it and the chrome is unmarked having spent a life without exposure to salt.
Inside the car is all original with factory leather, carpets and woodwork. All in good condition. Air conditioning is fitted but not currently operational.
Tremendous to drive with wave of torque that very quickly takes you beyond the legal speed limit, accompanied by a wonderfully bassy soundtrack. A superb long distance cruiser with comfort, style and performance.
Thanks to the recent suspension overhaul the car does not drop at all, even when left for weeks. It starts ‘on the buttton’ and runs perfectly with good oil pressure and temperature readings.
This is a rare opportunity to buy a right-hand drive 6.3 that hasn’t been restored, is extremely original and is completely corrosion free. A very usable example that’s ready to be used and enjoyed.
