Top of the Mercedes tree, the 560SEL was the most powerful and luxurious saloon car available from Mercedes in the eighties. This was the magnificent W126 S-Class in its ultimate, money-no-object form, so it’s no surprise that the 560 is the most sought after model today.
This 560SEL is in a particularly desirable specification. Finished in Diamond Blue metallic with dark blue velour interior, it’s very highly specified as all 560s were with air conditioning, cruise control, electric memory seats and so on, but this example also has electric, heated rear seats, electric rear window blind and heated front seats.
First registered on September 26th 1990 by Mercedes Edgware Road, this S-Class has covered 142k miles from new backed up by a full service history, all from Mercedes main dealers, comprising of 21 stamps in the service book. The last owner, an enthusiast and member of the owner’s club, spent around £10,000 with Mercedes specialists going through the car mechanically. This included an overhaul of both cylinder heads with new valve guides, new head gaskets, new timing chain guides and tensioner. Bills included in the history file.
The car is very original indeed, wearing its original paintwork. As the pictures show the car is clean, tidy and presentable but would benefit from a little bodywork, particularly to the wheel arches, and replacement bumper chromes. Pleasingly the original extended 560 front wings are still in place. The underside of the car is in excellent order with no corrosion.
The interior is in superb condition throughout. The dark blue velour is extremely hard to find in such fantastic condition without any fading or wear, the woodwork remains bright and glossy and the instrument needles remain their original orange. The original Becker Mexico stereo and ribbed over mats are still in place and, again, in excellent condition.
Overall this is a very honest, evidently well cared for car with substantial recent expenditure at a well-respected specialist. If you’re looking for a W126 the 560 is very much the one to have but not at all easy to find. With a little attention to the bodywork from a new owner this will be an exceptional car thanks to its mechanical condition, superb interior and history. On the road and ready to go, this is the perfect example to drive, enjoy and improve for the enthusiast who wants the ultimate W126.
