Little known in the UK as it was never officially imported, the 400E was a model of W124 that bridged the gap between the six-cylinder 320E and the mighty 500E. Built by Mercedes on the standard ‘narrow body’ W124 shell but with all the 500E modifications required to fit the M119 V8 engine. It was powered by a 4.2-litre version of the M119 coupled to the usual four-speed automatic.
The main markets for the left-hand drive only 400E were Europe, Japan and the USA, where it sold very well indeed. This car was sold new in the US. Finished in 040 Black with Palamino Tan leather interior, it was well specified including automatic climate control, cruise control, electric (memory on driver’s) seats, Becker Mexico and eight-hole alloys.
Recently imported into the UK, this 400E had just two owners from new in the US. 175k miles have been covered from new and the Carfax report shows a Full Mercedes Service History.
The paintwork is completely original, it has never had any bodywork and is completely rust free. However, as the photos show there are various marks and blemishes that could be improved.
The interior is in excellent condition with very good wood trim and superb original leather. The car has evidently been garaged for much of its life.
The alloy wheels are in very good condition and wear matching Michelin tyres all round.
The car has just had a conversion to Euro headlamps (UK left-hand traffic) but the original US headlamps come with the car.
Having inspected the car, we were pleased to find that the engine wiring harness has been replaced.
On the road this 400E drives beautifully with plenty of power, as you might expect for a 124 equipped with a 4.2-litre V8. The air conditioning blows cold and all accessories work.
Recently MoT’d and registered in the UK with all taxes paid.
A great opportunity to buy a rare, interesting and powerful W124 at a fraction of the price of a 500E. With a fantastic colour combination and originality, this is a car that offers tremendous scope to an enthusiast. Ready to drive and enjoy.
