Costing £99,950 when new in 1994, a staggering £21k more than the hugely capable SL500, the 6-litre V12 powered SL600 was a car that lived up to the aphorism, ‘nothing exceeds like excess’. It was a car bought by those who just wanted the ultimate SL, and hang the cost.
And what a car. In the early 90s the SL600 was a technological tour de force with a 400bhp V12, adaptive damping, an electronically folding roof that disappeared within the body of the car and a roll bar that deployed if the car sensed a crash was imminent. Not to mention the equipment level that went as far as an electronically adjustable interior mirror.
Given its price, the 600 was always rare in the UK. So today few right-hand drive, UK-supplied SL600s, like this Brilliant Silver example here, come up for sale.
First registered by Mercedes UK in Milton Keynes in September 1994, this SL600 was specified to the usual high level including electric, memory, heated seats, climate control, cruise control, traction control and adaptive damping. Finished in Brilliant Silver with contrasting black leather interior and a black hood and body-colour hardtop.
Today it has covered 93k miles supported by a full service history comprising of 16 services. All original books and manuals come with the car in the original V12 embossed wallet. Plus a folder of bills/receipts and previous MoTs.
Last year we carried out a complete replacement of the engine bay wiring harnesses – known to be a weak spot on all SL600s up to ’96. This comprised of the upper harness, the lower harness, the rewire of both throttle bodies and the replacement of the MAF looms. In addition, we carried out a major service on the car including changing the transmission fluid and differential oil. And in 2019 we have carried out an A service.
All 600s (along with all other Mercedes) from ’92 until late ’96 require all the engine bay looms to be replaced due to degradation of the wiring but most have not had this work or have just had the top loom replaced. Therefore, it is a huge boon to the next owner of this car that this critical and expensive work has been carried out.
Other recent work includes new brake discs and pads all round, new soft top hood windows and a matching set of Pirelli tyres.
As the photos show this SL600 is in very good condition throughout, original and unmodified with unmarked original eight-hole wheels, correct satin lower cladding/bumpers and superb paintwork.
The interior is very good and original with only light patina to the leather seats. The walnut trim is excellent with the veneered centre console unique to the 600 model.
Out on big open roads the 600 excels – smooth, refined and possessed of tremendous urge from the near silent V12 – this SL is a wonderful car to drive capable of covering great distances very quickly in total relaxation.
With not may right-hand drive V12-powered R129 SLs around, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a very good, highly usable example that has been very well looked after and had all the critical work already carried out. A rare, exotic and desirable SL that would be perfect for touring in the summer ahead.
