This rare 16-valve Porsche 944S is finished in the classic Guards Red with black ‘Porsche-Script’ cloth trim. Its last keeper owned the car from 1993 and it has covered a low 65k miles from new backed up by Full Service History.
Launched in 1982, the 944 built upon the transaxle 924 concept, but with beefier wheel arches and, crucially, a larger Porsche-designed and built engine to make better use of the car’s amazing chassis. By late 1985 the range was face-lifted with most noticeably a new and much more attractive interior, dubbed the ‘oval dash’. And in 1987 Porsche added another high performance model to go alongside the Turbo. The 944S featured a twin cam, 16-valve cylinder head to boost power to 190bhp. Subtle ’16 Ventiler’ badges next to the side repeaters identified the ‘S’.
This 1988 944S was supplied new by Charles Follett Porsche, London to the Chase Manhatten Bank of London through Leasecontracts PLC. The perfect machine for the yuppie banker!
By 1990 the car was resold by Rivervale Porsche of Henley-on-Thames to a Mr Edwards, then in 1992 to a Mr Jeffery, and in 1993 to a Mr Findlay who kept the car until I purchased it in 2015.
The car is extremely original and standard in every respect apart from the lower rear spoiler and Design 90 16” alloy wheels. These changes were made in the early 90s when the car was only a couple of years old, quite possibly by the Rivervale Porsche as they are genuine parts and the wheels have the correct Porsche locking wheel nuts with keys.
Even the standard fit Panasonic stereo is still in place and working correctly.
In terms of condition the car is superb, very original and completely rot-free. 944 enthusiasts will know that, despite being galvanised, the 944 has a propensity for rust in the sills and the rear wings behind the wheels. This car is perfect and original in both respects – it has never been repaired or painted, the sill seams are original and defined. Indeed, the underside of the car and wheel arches are still finished in the factory red paint. All the fuel and brake lines are rust free and original. This is a car that has seem very little salt.
The paintwork is beautiful and largely original. Rivervale Porsche dealer plates front and rear.
Similarly, the interior is excellent. There is no wear to the cloth seats. The genuine Porsche over-mats are still in place as is the original stereo. The original tool roll comes with the car along with the roof bag. All electrical equipment functions as it should.
All original books/manuals/owner’s pack comes with the car, plus the original sales brochures. There is a file of old MoTs, bills/invoices and correspondence between the owners and Porsche. The car has a Full Service History with the service book stamped by Porsche main dealers (Charles Follett and Rivervale) and Paragon Porsche. HPI clear with certificate.
At 64k miles Paragon Porsche carried out a cylinder head rebuild with new cam drive chain and tensioner, cambelt and tensioners/rollers. This year we have completed a service, replaced the cam/balance belts, brakes and had the wheels refurbished and fitted with new Avon tyres all round.
With such a low mileage this 944 drives superbly. A real driver’s car with tight precise handling and plenty of power in the upper rev range.
The 944S is a rare model in the 944 range and low mileage cars with provenance in superb original condition are hard to find and increasing in value.
