A fantastic example of one of the best cars Mercedes ever made, the iconic W124.
The 300E saloon is perhaps the sweet spot of the W124 range with power, refinement and usability in addition to the world-renowned quality, solidity and understated elegance these cars are revered for.
Finished in Astral Silver with optional black leather interior, this 300E is also optionally equipped with alloy wheels, electric seats, leather steering wheel and gear-shift, electric sunroof, automatic gearbox, illuminated vanity mirrors and headlamp wash/wipe.
The car has had three registered owners from new, though it’s effectively two as the first owner was Mercedes-Benz dealer, Greenoaks of Slough. According to the paperwork, the car was first given its PDI on 26/10/89, making it one of the very first of the face-lifted (series 2) W124s with the cladded lower half and updated interior – the facelift was first shown at the September ’89 Frankfurt show.
It’s believed that this car was a ‘showroom’ car for Greenoaks as while it was PDI inspected in October ’89, it was first registered to Greenoaks as H809JJB on November 7th, 1990. Five months later the 300E was sold to its first private owner, a Mr W. Cook who kept the car 16 years until 2007. It was then sold, by Mercedes specialists Avantgarde, to a Mr J. Langsford who has had the car 10 years to date.
This Mercedes comes with all its original books and manuals and, crucially, Full Service History.
The service history is quite incredible. Starting with its original bill of sale from Greenoaks to Mr Cook, the service book records 32 services from new. In fact it has run out of space in the service book. The car has only ever been looked after by MB main dealers (until 2003) and then one independent.
In addition to the service book there is a folder full of corroborating bills/invoices for Mercedes and the subsequent independent, plus every MoT certificate from new from 1993.
Clear HPI Certificate.
Both owners have maintained this car without regard to cost. To give examples, within the last ten years this car has had three transmission fluid/filter changes. In 2014 it had a precautionary headgasket and radiator replacement (even though nothing was wrong), and new brake fluid several times according to MB’s recommendations.
The MoT history paints the picture of how it has been cared for. Look for yourself online (H809JJB) and you will see in the last ten years it has never failed an MoT and in that period only ever had two advisories.
The bodywork is superb with no rust, dents or scratches. The critical jacking points and subframe mounts and inner wings are perfect. No welding, no repairs just excellent original condition. The alloy wheels are unmarked and shod with recent tyres.
The interior is excellent. The optional black leather is soft and extremely comfortable. No bolster wear on the driver’s seat.
On the road the 300E drives absolutely beautifully. Crisp, tight, quiet and refined with plenty of performance. The oil pressure and temperature are spot on. It’s a car that you can cover a lot of miles in at speed in total relaxation. It makes you wonder what progress we have made in the last 25 years.
Indeed, driving this car drives home how beautifully made these Mercedes were if correctly looked after.
If you’re looking for a really nice W124 with the six-cylinder engine, good colours, low owners and perfect provenance, this car is a fantastic buy.
